Mock Story

If the dollar continues to drop at its current rate, soon international students, including Americans, will be coming to Bulgaria for Work and Travel (WAT), said economics professor Investa Greedova.

“I am convinced that the lev will become stronger than the US dollar in less than five weeks,” Greedova said. “Everybody will be coming here for WAT, which will become known as WAW (‘work and work’) since there will be no travel – you can start work straight after the end of finals week.”

“I have already finished with all documents for Work and Work, and I submitted them to the ‘Differential’ agency,” said freshman Labor Workov. “I got a position at the prestigious döner place ‘Hot Dog 14’ and I will be at the shish until the end of August,” he added.

AUBG is ready to offer accommodation at lower prices in Skaptopara for all students staying in Blagoevgrad for WAW. The university is also considering jobs for waiters, as a part of a new project to turn the canteen into a 5-star restaurant during the summer.

In order to open many new WAW positions, AUBG will not stop with the reformation of the canteen. A large part of Skapto will be transformed into a luxurious summer resort, attracting many tourists, with activities such as riding the horses (and donkey) around Skapto and sunbathing by the river

“Of course, both Skapto and the canteen will be reverted back to their previous condition when the school year starts,” said professor Greedova. “We will make sure we prevent any damage to students from too much luxury,” she added.

The “Differential” WAW agency spokesman said that at least a hundred Americans will be coming to Blagoevgrad alone. They will take highly-paid jobs as street lamp cleaners, Bistritza river maintenance workers, and homeless dog feeders.

“WAW in Bulgaria is my opportunity to continue my education at Harvard,” said John Johnson, a student from Iowa. “With the leva I earn here during the summer, I will pay my tuition, and even have something left to buy myself a car!”

WAW agencies are still accepting applications, and are eager for more applicants, willing to discover their new future in Bulgaria.
